Getting out of town...
Today for the second time in two weeks I had to drive out of town for work. Today it was to meet a client and look at a site in Epping Forest, so not that far, but a really welcome break and change of pace.
It really reminded me of several things (all of which are pretty obvious and have no great insight).
- When you have a kid and family, work can be a lovely break and a change of pace. It’s nice to remember that you are a grown-up, a professional and a real person. More than just someone who is tall (can reach things), can provide food or knows how to turn Bing on the TV.
- It’s lovely to get out of town and see some trees and breathe a little, even if for work and only for a few hours. I still love London, but post lockdown I realise how much open space and clean air means to me
- Finally, and this is the one that makes me seem mean. It is sometimes lovely to be alone. This is odd as only yesterday I was moaning about being lonely. But a specific, and deliberate amount of time alone is great.
There are of course ways it could have been nicer, I could have not been working! I could have stopped at a pub and had a lovely meal etc. But another thing I have learnt over the last two years is to value the little breaks and to grab them when you get the opportunity…and of course, I did get paid to go.
